BRAINERD, MN, USA — In recognition of its long-standing commitment to promoting career readiness in its community, Lakeland Mold Company (Brainerd, Minnesota), a manufacturer of tooling for the global plastics industry, was recently awarded the Workplace Success Award at the Minnesota ACT College and Career Readiness ceremony in Roseville, Minnesota.

The Workplace Success Award, presented by ACT (American College Testing, a non-profit organization) and Minnesota State Commissioner of Education, Brenda Cassellius, recognizes businesses who most effectively partner with high schools, community colleges, and Chambers of Commerce to create and maintain an environment of sustained job growth via enhanced career preparedness.

According to Steve Lackner, Lakeland’s Human Resources Manager and acceptor of the Workplace Success Award, the recognition culminates more than a decade of building a skilled resource pool for local manufacturing firms. States Lackner: “14 years ago, when Lakeland initially partnered with Central Lakes College, local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, there was concern regarding the community’s ability to support our local manufacturing base with the right skills and a sufficient workforce.” Through the collaborative efforts of the Brainerd-area’s Bridges Academy – a consortium of local academia and businesses founded in 2000 to address this concern – Lackner adds that “we’ve been able to build a ‘feeder system’ of capable human resource to maintain a strong and growing manufacturing base here in the greater-Brainerd area.”

The success of Lakeland’s involvement in the Bridges Academy has catalyzed career readiness initiatives such as welding certification, machine trades, math and geometric tolerance, personal effectiveness training, and “is being looked at as a model for potential development on a national scale,” commented Lackner.

As the winner of Minnesota’s Workplace Success Award, Lakeland Mold Company is now a candidate for the national award, to be presented at ACT’s National Gala on College and Career Readiness in Washington, D.C. on June 3rd, 2014.
